Product Description
APPROVED FOR .75 CATEGORY A CEUs
Although the science on the long-term effects of concussive and sub-concussive impacts remains in its infancy, considerable attention has been placed on the potential for chronic negative outcomes. Medical practitioners, sporting organizations, the media, parents, coaches, and athletes are now faced with dwindling participation in contact sports, despite the known positive outcomes that stem from physical activity. To address the gap between what has been demonstrated by science and what is speculated to occur following concussion and/or repeated head impacts, this presentation will outline what is known and unknown in the medical literature surrounding the persistent effects of head impacts and address commonly propagated statements.
Objectives:
1. This presentation will synthesize the existing literature, allowing attendees to develop a strategy to educate athletes on the long-term risks of concussion and head impacts and balance those findings with the benefits of physical activity.
2. Attendees will be able to apply the disseminated knowledge to the clinical practice of obtaining patient history relevant to concussion and repeated head impacts
3. By the completion of the session, attendees will have the tools to evaluate commonly statements made by the media and address those statements based on the presented information.
4. Attendees will gain the knowledge to know the appropriate time to refer athletes with repeated head trauma to appropriate medical specialists
